Summer Packing for the Parks

The last time I was planning what to wear for our Disney trip, it was fall/winter. Packing for a summer trip to the World is a completely different story! I had someone ask me what I would recommend for summertime in the parks. I would be remiss if I didn't note that I ALWAYS recommend going to Disney in the cooler/off season. However, I understand that's not always possible. So here's the list!

I have mixed feelings about hats. On one hand, it's great to protect your head and face from the sun - that's very important! However, you need to bear in mind what kind of photographs you want of yourself while visiting Disney. I KNOW how vain this sounds! However, if you want pictures of you with your cute-dressed kids, you might not want to be baseball-capping it. Again - this is TOTALLY personal preference! Some people love the low-maintenence act of throwing on a baseball cap and not having to worry about hair. I am just not one of those people.

I personally do not believe that you need to join the ranks of the socks-with-sandals, crazed tourists who wear the ultimate awkward accessory: THE FANNY PACK. Now, if you are a Fanny Packer, please withold your defensive statements. I totally understand the ease and security with which you carry your Fanny. However, I believe that a backpack is a great way to hold your necessities, especially with kids. Also, if you want a smaller option, a travel bag with a shoulder strap is great. You just need an easy way to carry your items, which I will list below.

Here are some items that we always carry in our backpack:
  • PONCHOS. The Disney ones are expensive, and in the summer you are pretty much guaranteed some rain. Usually they are relatively light, sporadic showers, but you need to have something to cover with so you can keep going. Don't be one of those families that cowers when it rains! You can take advantage of the time when other guests are having to duck into The Emporium to buy their gear.

  • LIGHT SNACKS are great to have, especially with kids! We stick in a few breakfast bars, fruit snacks, or small plastic baggies filled with Goldfish. At this time, Disney is still pretty loose with their food policy. It's wise to be prepared should the need arise, and it can also save you money!

  • SUNSCREEN is vital! Cover everything - and don't forget your ears! The quickest way to kill a vacation (anywhere, not just Disney World) is a sunburn. Keep it with you and apply it often. Another great item is a sunscreen stick, which is great for lips and quick reapplications.

  • TYPE ALL OF YOUR DINING RESERVATIONS, including what times and the confirmation numbers, to keep handy in your backpack. It helps so much to have all of the information on one piece of paper. Also, should there be an issue with a reservation (and there rarely is), it's a lot easier to pull out that paper, rather than having to look it up on your phone.

  • REFILLABLE, FILTERED WATER BOTTLES can save you a lot of money! Just fill them up at the water fountains throughout the park.

  • PLASTIC SACKS to wear around your shoes for water rides are a great thing to have. It's a small step that will save a lot of uncomfortable walking! Put the whole bag around your foot, and tuck it up into your socks. You could even bring hair rubber bands to secure the bags.

Something I DON'T think you should have in your backpack is your camera. Use the shoulder strap (you should have one, or buy one) and wear it around your neck/shoulders at all times. I experienced having my camera lost/stolen at Disney, and it's devastating. I carried it in my backpack or around my neck at all times, and the split second it wasn't around my neck, it was gone. We still don't know what happened to it, but you can never be too careful! Keep your camera around your neck/shoulders AT ALL TIMES!

SHOES are a vital choice when you will be doing a LOT of walking. I always recommend tennis shoes first, worn with socks. Use duct tape for blisters (it won't sweat off). I've seen a ton of people use flip flops, and this is a personal choice. I've found that even the Old Navy-style flip flops can rub a blister and they also offer no arch support. You NEED arch support! Again, if you're wanting to go the non-tennis shoe route, break in your desired shoes well before you trip!

PERSONAL FANS and things of that nature can be useful if you find yourself stuck in a long line. Hopefully you're following a Touring Plan and won't find yourself in such a situation!

As far as clothing goes, I think it's important to wear shorts or a tennis skirt (formerly known as a "skort" in the height of its fashion popularity) in a material that won't rub or chafe your legs. This is SO IMPORTANT! Also bear in mind that materials can change when wet (Splash Mountain, anyone?). If you're in doubt, wear the shorts in question and go walking for about 20 miles. I kid; you don't need to walk THAT much, but wouldn't you rather have a trial run of a couple of miles or so before you do the real deal? The bonus is that it helps get your body ready for all of the walking! If I were to go in the summer, I would choose an athletic short or tennis skirt. I tend to shy away from denim, but some people can handle it just fine. Again, this is why I recommend a test run!

Wear cool, breathable shirts. I think that's self-explanatory!

As far as the kids go, you also want to watch for shorts that could rub or chafe. If you go the cute "pillowcase dress" route, make sure your daughter wears shorts underneath. There are a lot of cute cotton shirts that can be personalized for a Disney vacation on Etsy.

There are obviously more items that could complete your packing list, but this should give you a good start! as always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Disney Wardrobe, Fall 2010

My husband and I will leave for The World in 18 DAYS!!!! We are so excited!

I knew I needed some pants to wear for this trip, since I was pregnant the last time we went! Here's what I'm planning to pack for our Fall Disney trip:

I only take about 2 (maybe 3 just in case) pairs of pants that I know fit well and will be comfortable. My biggest rule: NO DENIM!!!! It rubs against your legs and I really don't think it's comfortable for that much walking. My capris are cotton and/or athletic material. Then I take several types of shirts so I can adjust according to the weather. I recently bought two pairs of capri pants, and they were 70-80% off because it's the end of the summer season! One pair is brown from Old Navy, and the other pair is a dark purple, which I got from JC Penney (the styles below are similar to what I purchased):

I'm also taking plain, cotton short- and long-sleeved T-shirts. These are great because they're thin enough to be comfortable under jackets (if need be), and they're a breathable material if it gets warm.

When we went to Disney in October 2008, it was very mild (and even on the warm side) most days, but one day it was COLD! This proves that you always need to take several different types of pieces so you can layer according to the weather. I'm taking a fleece jacket and one turtleneck (it SAVED me on the last trip!) just in case! (My style of fleece jacket has a full zipper in front so it's easy to take on and off).

For interest, and if the weather allows, I'm bringing one or two fun scarves this time around. I personally like to look pulled-together, even at a theme park! It makes the outfit a little cuter, and it's easy to take off if it gets too hot or it gets in my way.

I've learned that tennis shoes are absolutely the best shoes to wear at Disney. I've worn all types of shoes over my different trips, and they're not always the cutest, but my feet never hurt (even while pregnant last time!). I'm wearing no-show socks. It makes tennis shoes look a little more polished. =)

That's a good overview of what I'm taking for our fall trip! If you have any questions for what to wear on your Disney trip, I can give it my best shot to help out! :)

What to Wear : Looks for Little Boys

My last post was about Disney looks for little girls. Now it's time for little boys! This can be a little more challenging, because girls naturally want to dress up and be festive for the occasion. Sometimes boys take a little more convincing. But there are still some great options!

First of all, if your little boy refuses to wear "themed" clothing, maybe he could wear a special set of pajamas for the trip!

I LOVE the color scheme of this little T-Shirt! It's different, but still very "Disney." I think this is a must if I ever have a little boy!

Here are sibling shirts. A great way to get younger little boys to cooperate is for them to see their other siblings participating. Plus, this style is very simple and plain so it has more appeal to little boys.

This is perfect for a birthday!

Like I said in my previous post, iron-on appliques are the most cost-effective but provide a really cute look! Just iron on to the shirt of your choosing!

Costumes are also available for little boys. However, it might be an easier option to provide "accessories" which always them to wear a normal outfit but still get into the Disney spirit. This little Peter Pan hat is adorable!

Some boys want to jump all in and participate! This Peter Pan costume looks comfortable, which is key.

$20.97

Here's another set of accessories. These are Cowboy Woody's, and this would also be cost-effective. If your little boy is wanting to dress up, pack your own jeans, shirt, and boots, and add this accessory pack. Be sure that everything is comfortable, and it's a good idea to limit "costume" time. I think accessories are a great option for little boys!

$19.99

Since "Pirates of the Caribbean" is all the rage right now, a pirate costume would be perfect. Little boys still feel "cool" and they will fit right in at Disney World.

Pirate Costume
$14.25

***It has been recommended by some experts that for safety reasons, especially in a crowded place like Disney World, full name monograms shouldn't be used. However, I've seen children with their names on shirts often. If this concerns you, another option is to do just a one-letter monogram.***

There you have it! Proof that Disney dress-up is not just for little girls! Little Princes can look just as festive and charming! :)

What to Wear: Looks for Little Girls

We haven't taken our little girl to Disney World yet, but when we do, I know it will be hard to contain myself with the ADORABLE outfits!

When you visit Disney World, obviously comfort is key. My friend Sarah had a great idea: they let their little girls wear their costumes during the evening only. It gives them something to look forward to and it's less hassle for everyone!

I focused this post on girly items, and will do one for little boys soon! Here are a few suggestions and "inspiration" ideas for packing your next (little girl) suitcase to the World:

A great option is packing comfy shorts or leggings (depending on the weather), and if you're going to buy something "cutesy," make it a cotton T-Shirt. It still gives that custom, special look without being uncomfortable.

I love these little shirts with Minnie as the Princesses! The matching hairbow would be a must.

Custom Boutique Applique Princess Minnie T-Shirts
$24.99 (Add matching bow for $3)

Is this not the cutest thing for siblings!?

Tutus have become very popular and look adorable. Be aware that sometimes the netting can start to feel itchy, especially if you're going during a hot time of year. Great look for pictures, but be sure you take a back-up outfit in your backpack.

The easiest way to get a cute "Disney" look is through hair bows, bands, and accessories. I thought these little "Mouse Ears" clips were so creative!

Here's one of the great cotton T-Shirts I was talking about. You can pair it with just about anything, and your little one will be super comfy.

Here's a really cost-effective option: Iron-On Appliques! Buy your own T-Shirt (it doesn't have to be anywhere near expensive) and iron away. I've had a lot of success with iron-ons while making onesies for my little girl. You can't beat the price!

Minnie Mouse Iron-On Applique
$3.00

The ultimate (and probably most popular) way to celebrate being in Disney World: dress like a Disney Princess! I wouldn't recommend going the whole day in costume. Reserve it for nighttime or a special character meal. I also recommend trying to find one that has a shorter skirt. Trains can get in the way, especially for little girls who like to walk around rather than stroll in the stroller. I advise buying a pre-made costume (as opposed to having one custom-made). It's less expensive, and you won't stress if something happens to the costume. These were several I found that have a higher-quality look but aren't expensive:

Cinderella Costume
$26.95

Snow White Costume
$29.99

Part of the excitement of a Disney Vacation (especially for a little girl) is dressing up and feeling like a princess. There's no better place than Disney World to dress as royally (and cute!) as possible. There are endless options to make adorable memories in!
